Oboshi Yuranosuke had made his home in Yamashina outside Kyoto and lived quietly with his wife Oishi. On a snowy day, Tonase, wife of Kakogawa Honzo, and her daughter Konami came to visit.
Konami was betrothed to Yuranosuke's son, Oboshi Rikiya. But Honzo was the man who had seized Hangan in the palace and kept him from killing Moronao. Oishi refused the wedding: "We cannot take as a bride the daughter of the man who stood in the way of our lord's revenge."
"If she cannot marry, I will kill my daughter and die myself," said Tonase, drawing her sword to cut Konami down. Konami too was ready and put her hands together in prayer. Just then, from outside came the sound of a shakuhachi played by a wandering komuso monk.
When Oishi said, "I will allow the wedding. But as the wedding gift, I want Lord Honzo's head," a man dressed as a komuso came in at the door. It was Honzo himself.
Honzo deliberately provoked Oishi and abused Yuranosuke. Then Rikiya leapt out and ran Honzo through with a spear. Honzo had taken the spear on purpose.
Yuranosuke came out from the inner room. Gasping in pain, Honzo told what was in his heart: "When I held back Lord Hangan that day, it was to save my own lord, who had bribed Moronao. But because of it Lord Hangan died by seppuku and the En'ya house was destroyed. I have blamed myself ever since. I offer this life of mine: please take Konami as Lord Rikiya's bride."
As his gift to his son-in-law, Honzo handed over a plan of Moronao's mansion. It showed everything in detail, from the layout of the rooms to the number of storm shutters and the hidden chambers. Yuranosuke bowed deeply and accepted Honzo's sincerity.
That night Rikiya and Konami made their vows as husband and wife for one night only.
In Yamashina, Oishi Shrine stands on the site of Oishi Kuranosuke's former home, and the "Oishi cherry," said to have been planted by Oishi, blooms there.
