Collection 9 (the gathering of the eight and the great Kanto war)

Many years after Princess Fuse's death, the eight dog warriors, born with the eight jewels, grew up in various parts of the Kanto, each following a strange fate.

Inuzuka Shino (filial piety), Inukawa Sosuke (righteousness), Inuyama Dosetsu (loyalty), Inukai Genpachi (faith), Inuta Kobungo (brotherly love), Inue Shinbei (benevolence), Inusaka Keno (wisdom) and Inumura Daikaku (courtesy). All eight had a peony-shaped birthmark somewhere on their bodies, and each treasured his jewel.

Meeting, parting and meeting again in different places, the dog warriors came to learn that they were brothers bound by the same fate. At last all eight came together under the Satomi clan in Awa. Yoshinari, son of Satomi Yoshizane, took them into his service and gave each of them a Satomi princess in marriage.

At that time the lords of the Kanto, led by the Kanto deputies Ogigayatsu Uesugi Sadamasa and Yamanouchi Uesugi Akisada, formed an alliance and sent a great army to destroy the Satomi. This was the so-called "great Kanto war."

Each of the eight dog warriors led an army and met the enemy attacking by land and sea. Fierce battles were fought at Gyotoku, at Konodai and in a sea battle off Suzaki. With all their strategy and valor, the eight broke the allied army and led the Satomi to victory.

After the war the eight served as senior retainers of the Satomi and devoted themselves to the prosperity of Awa. It is said that, years later, having seen the fate of the Satomi house through, all eight went together into Mount Tomi, became immortals and vanished.

Tateyama Castle was built in the Azuchi-Momoyama period as the seat of the Satomi clan. The present keep was rebuilt in 1982 and houses the "Hakkenden Museum," which introduces the world of the story.
