Fuwa Barrier

Scroll 28, Emperor Tenmu year 1, sixth to seventh month (the Fuwa road)

Leaving Yoshino, Prince Oama's company crossed Iga through the night and entered Ise. On the way, word from Okida no Esaka and others told them that Prince Takechi had escaped from Omi, and he joined them. The company secured the Suzuka barrier, and by the Toho River in Asake district of Ise, Oama bowed from afar to the sun goddess Amaterasu.

When Oama reached Kuwana, he sent Prince Takechi ahead to Fuwa to direct the fighting. Before this, his attendant Murakuni no Oyori and others had raced to Mino, gathered three thousand men, and blocked the Fuwa road. Fuwa was the key road between Omi and the east. With it held, the Omi court could no longer call up troops from the eastern provinces.

Entering Fuwa, Oama set up a temporary palace at Nogami. Prince Takechi came out from Wazami to meet him. Oama lamented, "The Omi court has gathered the ministers of the left and right and courtiers skilled in strategy, and they are laying plans. I have no one to plan with, only young boys. What am I to do?" Prince Takechi rolled up his sleeves, gripped his sword and answered, "However many courtiers Omi has, how can they stand against the emperor's spirit? I will lead the generals and strike them down." Oama praised him and placed all military matters in his hands.

Troops from the east gathered one after another, and Oama's army split in two and advanced on Yamato and on Omi. On the twenty-second of the seventh month, Murakuni no Oyori and the others fought the decisive battle with the Omi army at the Seta Bridge. Chison, the Omi commander, had rigged the bridge so that its planks could be pulled away with ropes, and lay in wait. But Okida no Wakaomi, struck by arrows, charged across the bridge and broke the enemy lines. The Omi army collapsed. The next day Prince Otomo, with nowhere left to run, hanged himself at Yamazaki.

In the second month of the following year, Prince Oama took the throne at the Asuka Kiyomihara Palace. He was Emperor Tenmu.
