Collections 4-5 (the monster cat of Mount Koshin)

After parting from Shino and Kobungo at Gyotoku, Inukai Genpachi traveled the provinces in search of the other dog warriors. One day he came to the foot of Mount Koshin at Ashio in the province of Shimotsuke.

Mount Koshin was a steep mountain of towering, strangely shaped rocks, long said to be home to terrible monsters. Lost in the mountains after dark, Genpachi decided to spend the night in a rock cave.

Late at night a strange procession came from nowhere. At its head was a dreadful monster cat a full jo, about three meters, tall. It wore human clothes, carried a sword and rode a horse. Behind it followed many cat monsters.

Genpachi quickly took up his bow and shot the monster cat through the eye. With a shriek, it vanished along with the procession.

Afterward, in the mountains, Genpachi met the ghost of a samurai named Akaiwa Ikkaku. Ikkaku begged him, "I was killed by the monster cat of this mountain, and the cat has taken my shape and is passing itself off as me. Please tell my son Kakutaro and have him avenge me."

When Genpachi came down the mountain and visited Ikkaku's house, there was indeed a man calling himself Ikkaku, but he had a wounded eye, in the same place where Genpachi had shot the monster cat.

Ikkaku's son Kakutaro, deceived by the false father, had been driven into a painful position. Genpachi told him the truth, and together the two exposed the false Ikkaku and slew the monster cat.

Kakutaro was the dog warrior holding the jewel of courtesy, and later changed his name to Inumura Daikaku. Mount Koshin still has the Koshin Sanso lodge, and a trail that winds among the strange rocks.
