When the land had been ceded, Amaterasu and the god Takagi ordered Ninigi, Amaterasu's grandson, to go down to earth. As Ninigi was about to descend, a god stood at the crossroads of heaven, lighting the High Plain of Heaven above and the Central Land of Reed Plains below. This was Sarutahiko, a god of the land, who had come out to guide the child of the heavenly gods.
Ninigi was accompanied by the chiefs of five clans, among them Ame-no-Koyane, Futodama and Ame-no-Uzume. He was given the great curved jewels and the mirror that had lured Amaterasu out of the Rock Cave of Heaven, along with the sword Kusanagi. The gods Omoikane and Tajikarao went with him too. Amaterasu told him, "Regard this mirror as my own spirit, and worship it as you would worship me."
So Ninigi left his rock throne in heaven, pushed through the many-layered clouds, forcing his way along, and came down in majesty from the Floating Bridge of Heaven. He landed on Kujifuru Peak at Takachiho in Himuka, in Tsukushi.
Looking out over the land, Ninigi said: "This place faces Kara across the sea and runs straight to Cape Kasasa. The morning sun shines straight upon it and the evening sun glows on it. This is a very good land." He set thick palace pillars on the bedrock, raised the roof-beams high enough to reach heaven, and lived there.
