| Hyakukannon Onsen Legends & Origins | The name comes from the “Hyakukannon-dō” hall an ancestor of the local Shiraishi family, a devout worshipper of Kannon, built at their own expense, housing one hundred hand-carved statues of Kannon in reference to the “Hundred Kannon of Japan” (the combined pilgrimage routes of Saigoku, Bandō, and Chichibu). The water that wells up is fossil seawater, brown and smelling of petroleum, a self-flowing hot spring that's rare on the Kanto plain. Details |
